A Daddy day disaster...

On Friday afternoon, we pulled out the finger paint to make some surprises for Daddy.
I told Max that they were a surprise, so we wouldn't tell Daddy for a couple of days, and I totally thought he was understanding me.
Also, in an ironic twist, Eli the messiest baby ever, dislikes finger painting.

berry fueled painting session

As soon as Julian walked in the door, Max said, " We made you a special surprise Daddy" and then proceeded to show him where they were hiding.
Note to self, two year olds are not good at keeping surprises!

Thankfully Julian has more patience than I do, so he resisted looking at our cards even though he knew they existed.

This was the first of many plans that went awry on Father's Day.
Our original plan was to go to the Renaissance Festival, but with fires in the area we cancelled those plans. As it turns out, we would have had to cancel anyway because Max woke up Saturday night burning a fever. It was a pretty high fever and he was talking all sorts of nonsense, saying things like there was a ducky in his bed, birds singing, and a big hole he might fall in.
Concerning.
I'm not sure if it's just me, but when my babies are sick I don't sleep well, I'm constantly peeking in their room to see how they are doing...
So at some point between midnight and 6:00 am when Max woke up, I forgot it was Father's Day, I forgot, and Julian got up with Max while I slept in awhile.
That is just the type of amazing Dad he is.

Eventually it occurred to me and I ran downstairs feeling like the worst wife ever, but the day unfortunately did not get much better. It was like a comedy of errors around here. Max wasn't feeling well and basically said "Nope" to every single thing we offered him, since we were home bound Julian thought he might be able to fix our sprinkler only to find he was missing a tool he needed and once he returned from buying said tool he was greeted with a downpour, I put some dough in the oven to rise for dinner and then accidentally baked it when I preheated the oven to make lunch, our faucet started leaking... it really was just one thing after another until we just gave up trying and decided we will have to have a Father's Day re-do in a week or two.

We did manage to make some cards. The hands on the mantel open up to say "I love you"  "this much", so cute!
Julian took Max out to see the rain, telling him about how thunder and lightning develop, love their talks.

I love holidays and celebrations, but at the same time there is that added pressure to make the day "perfect" or good and sometimes that just isn't possible.

I was really disappointed, because if anyone deserves to be celebrated, it's Julian.
He is an amazing father.

Late at night, when the mommy guilt starts to seep in...
"Was I patient enough?"
"Did we read enough books?"
"Did they both feel loved and special today?"
"Did we eat enough veggies?"

There are a few thoughts that always put my mind at ease, and one of them is to think about Julian and how lucky our boys are to have him as a Daddy.
I am so grateful to be parenting with him.
His patience surpasses my own, he is calm and rational, but also affectionate and funny.
The boys can't wait until he gets home each day so they can have their wrestling sessions.
He loves his boys with his whole heart.
And we love him right back.

We look forward to celebrating him soon.

Happy Father's Day!
