Away we go...

One of Max's first ever outings was a trip up to the mountains to see fall foliage at just a few weeks old. I love that my first few months of parenting coincided with the arrival of fall, every year this season feels extra special and finds me a tad bit nostalgic.

We saw snow in the forecast and decided sooner would likely be better than later this year...so we loaded up the car with lots of snacks and we were on our way.

Mountains, here we come!

We started in one of our favorite little mountain towns and headed up the canyon.
At first, we would see one or two yellow trees ..

As we gained elevation we found ourselves surrounded by beautiful fall colors lining both sides of the road, when the sun caught the trees they were illuminated into the most beautiful sparkling golden color...pictures really don't do it justice (and I was so entranced I forgot to take pictures through most of our trip).

We found a quiet little spot to take a break and let the boys explore.

There is nothing like that crisp, fresh mountain air.

These two are so at home in the woods. Julian and I often say that if we ever win the lottery we will buy a bunch of land up in the mountains, build ourselves a cabin, and live our days happily up there sending the boys outside to explore each day.
They would likely only return to eat and sleep, they are outdoor lovers for sure!

After our break, we hopped back in the car and just kept driving.
We were fueled by good conversation, the Amelie soundtrack, and pretzel hugs.

We found ourselves in Fairplay/South Park...then over to Breckenridge for dinner before turning back towards home.

I love road trips...the time together in the car with nothing else to do and nowhere else to be.
And with that, we checked another fall to-do off the list!
